Widerness Survival Series 2010

This series of classes is designed to be easily accessible and affordable to anyone who wishes to learn more about taking care of yourself in the woods or to develop a closer connection to your natural environment. Each session will be 2 hours long (unless otherwise noted) and cover a specific wilderness skill. The series will culminate in September with a 2-day overnight to test many of the skills that we have practiced this summer. Register for the whole series and receive a discount. There are no prerequisites for this series.

Fire June 30, 2010

In our bioregion fire making is possibly the most important single skill you can know for short-term survival. This installment of the Wilderness Survival Series will cover the basics of building and maintaining fires as well as the use of the bow drill to make fires by friction.

Water July 7, 2010

The average person can survive 3 to 4 days without water in good conditions but it will be a very unpleasant experience. Water is critical for our body to function normally and complete the other tasks necessary to survive. This installment of the Wilderness Survival Series will look at the importance of water, where to find it in our bioregion as well as in more arid climates and how to collect and treat it safely.

Navigation July 14, 2010

A map and compass are powerful tools for finding your way in the woods. What would you do if you found yourself lost without them? This installment will focus on the techniques and art of aid-less navigation.

Shelter August 25, 2010

The ability to make a warm dry shelter can mean the difference between a comfortable night in the woods and a very wet, cold experience. A shelter provides you with a home in the woods. This installment will cover the 4 basic principles of shelter building that cam be adapted to any climate and we will construct an insulated debris shelter.

Plants August 21, 2010

Everywhere you go you are surrounded by food, medicine, fiber, fire making supplies, glue, insect repellent, building materials, and more. The gifts that we receive from the plants are many and varied. In this installment of the Wilderness Survival Series we will take a look at some of the most common and universal plant allies that can save your life in an emergency or just help you be more at home in the forests and fields.

Survival Weekend Overnight September 4-5, 2010 – Closed

Put your skills to the test in a safe and controlled environment. Students will build and sleep in their own shelters, practice making fire in the field, forage for food and water. By actually living the skills you will gain an understanding that cannot be achieved at home. There is no prerequisite for this course but it is recommended that you have some previous bushcraft experience.

Overnight course includes:
• Build a shelter and sleep in it
• Clothing considerations for the outdoors
• Make fire with modern and primitive methods
• Fire safety and primitive cooking know-how
• Campfire stories and games
• Navigate by the sun, stars and storytelling
• Water purification methods
• Cordage from plant fibers
• Useful knots
• Knife and axe handling skills
• Signaling for rescue
• Wild edible, medicinal and useful plants
