Northwest Herb Guild

The Northwest Herb Guild exists to preserve the knowledge and craft of herbal medicine. We meet semi-weekly in the evening to share herbs, recipes, and wisdom. Each meeting we will focus on a different herb, skill or health topic. Examples of meeting subjects include rose hips, colds & flus, yarrow, tinctures, dandelion, harvesting techniques, and comfrey. The Northwest Herb Guild meets every-other Monday at 6pm. Exceptions will be sent out vial email to those on the list.

Recipes

Horehound Candy

1/2 Cup strong horehound infusion

1 Cup honey

1 Cup Sucanat or Rapadura

1 Tablespoon butter

Prepare your infusion by letting a few tablespoons of horehound herb infuse in 1 cup of water for a couple of hours with a tight lid.  Squeeze out herb and mix 1/2 Cup infusion with the remaining ingredients over medium/high heat.  Stir constantly.  When mixture reaches 250 degrees (softball stage), remove from heat.  Pour out into a glass pan to cool.  Roll into balls and wrap in unbleached parchment paper.

Real Marshmallows

1.5 ounces marshmallow powder

0.5 ounce licorice powder

3 Tablespoons honey

1/4 Cup warm water or infusion

Arrowroot powder for dusting

Mix marshmallow, licorice, honey, and water.  Stir occasionally for half an hour.  Roll into balls, and dust with arrowroot powder.  Store in fridge.

Fire Cider

1 onion, chopped

3 cloves garlic, sliced

Honey

Horseradish

Apple Cider Vinegar

Place onion and garlic in a pint jar, and fill with honey.  Allow to sit about one or two weeks.Slice horseradish and pound each piece, place in pint jar.  Cover with vinegar and allow to sit at least two weeks.  When I pour off the vinegar I “reuse” the horseradish.  Just add more vinegar.  Those roots are potent!Mix these two preparations together. To take, just add a tablespoon or so to some water, add a pinch of salt for a complete electrolyte!
